Parking Lot Asphalt Resurfacing in Richmond Hill

June 11, 20242 min read

Recently, a dermatologist office in Richmond Hill was in dire need of asphalt repairs. Cracked asphalt and ruts in the sub base made the driving experience a nightmare for both employees and patients. We ultimately decided to install a resurface of the base layer on a Saturday morning as it would suit both their aesthetic and practical needs.

Firstly, here's why we worked on a Saturday

The dermatologist office's parking lot is always busy during the week. So, to avoid disrupting their operations and inconveniencing their patients, we chose to complete the project on a Saturday. This way, we could work efficiently without any interruptions and provide the asphalt some time to settle before they open back up on Monday.

Now let's get into it-

Step-by-Step Parking Lot Resurfacing

1. Milling Down High Points:

We started by milling down the high points of the old asphalt. This process involves grinding down the uneven surfaces to create a smooth base for the new asphalt layer and also creates space for the new asphalt to meet flush with existing infrastructure like curbs or catch basins.

2. Applying Asphalt Glue:

Next, we applied a layer of asphalt glue to the old asphalt. This glue, also known as a tack coat, helps the new asphalt bond to the existing surface. It ensures that the new layer adheres properly, enhancing the durability of the parking lot.

3. Levelling Off Ruts:

We then addressed any ruts in the existing asphalt. Ruts are depressions or grooves that can form over time due to heavy traffic. We used a skim coat of asphalt to fill and level these areas, creating an even surface.

4. Fresh Layer of HL3 Asphalt:

After levelling off the ruts, we applied a fresh layer of HL3 asphalt over the entire parking lot. HL3 asphalt is a high-quality mix designed for smoothness and durability, perfect for parking lots. This new layer provided a sleek, smooth finish, enhancing both the appearance and functionality of the parking lot.

5. Final Touches for a Smooth Finish

With the new asphalt in place, the final step was reinstating the line painting. We repainted the parking lines the same evening, ensuring clear and organized parking spaces for the dermatologist's patients. Proper line painting is crucial for safety, accessibility and maximizing the available space.
