Types of Hot Mix Asphalt

April 21, 20242 min read

Choosing the right type of asphalt is essential for any residential paving project. Each type offers unique benefits and is suited for different environmental and traffic conditions. Here’s an overview of the four most common types of residential asphalt.

1. HL3 Commercial Asphalt HL3 Commercial Asphalt is the most durable type, containing a high percentage of gravel. This asphalt is ideal for areas that will bear heavy traffic, making it a great long-term investment for driveways and access roads. Its robust nature ensures fewer repairs and a longer lifespan. However, with greater strength comes a more granular look.

2. HL3 Fine Asphalt With a slightly lower gravel content than HL3 Commercial, HL3 Fine is durable but has a finer finish. It's suitable for residential areas with low to moderate traffic. This type provides a balance between aesthetic appeal and moderate durability.

3. HL2 Asphalt HL2 Asphalt offers a medium level of durability with equal parts gravel and stone dust. This type can handle smaller vehicles without frequent maintenance, making it a cost-effective option for private driveways.

4. HL1 Asphalt The least durable, HL1 Asphalt, is primarily used for its aesthetic appeal rather than functionality. With no gravel and all stone dust, it’s suitable for low-traffic areas like walkways or decorative spaces. Though it requires more maintenance, its low installation cost is a draw for certain projects.

Our Preference:

At Pavemar Paving, we prioritize the use of high-quality materials that ensure longevity and durability for our projects. That's why we typically DO NOT use HL2 and HL1 asphalt types for our paving solutions. These types of asphalt, while aesthetically appealing, do not meet our standards for durability and long-term performance, especially under the challenging weather conditions in Toronto. Our focus is on providing superior, long-lasting paving solutions that offer the best return on investment and minimize future maintenance costs for our clients.
